Section win for Drennan Oxford team member Ian Young on the recent Angling Trust Individual National Championship.
“I drew in C section and had a nice bush on the far margin to fish towards, so I decided to set up two types of rigs. Squat rigs consisting of 4×10 and 4×12 floats with 0.075 Supplex Fluorocarbon and size 22 or 24 hooks and rigs to fish over to the bush. Those rigs consisted of a 4×12 float on 0.18 to a 0.14 hooklength and a size 16 or 14 Wide Gape.
“I had a few fish to start on maggot over ground bait, before switching to the left side of the bush with worm on the hook. Two hybrids quickly followed but I then had to wait a while for a third.”
With no more bites, Ian edged his my heavier rig closer to the bush. After missing a bite immediately, he dropped it back in and landed a 10oz perch, followed by a number of hybrids and skimmers before bites dried up.
Ian then fed his squat line and caught small roach and gudgeon for a while before trying the bush again.
“I did have three more fish from under the bush in three casts about an hour from the end, but then I had to nick the odd fish on squats until the whistle.
“My final weight was 4kg 980g (10lb 15oz), just enough to win my ten peg section and fourth overall.”
The next day I fished on the Thames in the Oxford Summer League and drew at the top end of Folly and also managed to win my section with 13lb 8oz of roach and perch.
