Affable Welsh Angler, Author, Singer and Railway Tamper Driver Terry ‘Theo’ Theobald has had a terrific hit of big Chub whilst trotting with his Matchpro Ultralight 15ft rod on the River Great Ouse.
By keeping a close eye on the river, talking to the local tackle shop and fitting in a short session around work shifts, Theo timed his trip perfectly as the river fined down after a long period of high water levels. This meant perfect trotting conditions, ‘unfished’ swims and very hungry Chub – great angling!
Theo used a 4 Swan Loafer with a 5grm Olivette on 4lb Supplex, then a size 14 to 4lb Wide Gape Spade End hook to nylon, with a size 4 shot 4 inches above the hook finishing the rig off nicely. He also incorporated a tiny size 22 Preston Mini Match swivel to minimize line twist – which can be an issue when constantly trotting and retrieving float gear, especially in brisk flows.
Using plain old maggot hookbaits, Theo bagged 11 quality Chub in just 6 hours fishing, including six 4lbers, a 5lb 7oz, 5lb 10oz and a beauty of 6lb 8oz!
“The rod held them inches from a snag with 4lb Supplex, absolutely superb!” Theo told us.
