Boston’s Garbolino RAF match angler Steven Reid sent us a really good story about a recent match win using Drennan Fluorocarbon hooklength.
Steven had read one of Alan Scotthorne’s recent articles where he explained his preference for Fluorocarbon hooklengths, and decided he wanted to broaden his own strategies by trying the same – especially when fishing very clear water Winter venues.
After some early problems with the material, Steven meticulously prepared a number of new hooklengths in 0.10mm (1.6lb) from a brand new spool, then went out to a local commercial to practice. After around 50lb of hardfighting Mirrors & F1s in about three hours he was a lot more confident!
The next day Steven went back for the venue’s Sunday open match, and after a hard frost, found the pool partially covered in ice – tough conditions, but a good scenario in which to try the delicate Fluorocarbon hooklength. But, after a long hard 5 hours Steven had won the match! 15lb was enough to beat the venue ‘flyer peg’ into 2nd place and very rewarding to put fish in the net when most of the other competitors were struggling for a bite.
“I think the Polemaster Fluorocarbon has definitely earned its place in my fishing now” remarked Steven – who is pictured below with a bag of carp in warmer times.
