Typically, perch are targeted by features, be it an overhanging tree or a bridge. But Steve Frost tempted this 4lb 8oz beast from an open water swim on the River Wharfe.

He was targeting a stretch that had previous form for a small shoal of very large perch and cast a double lobworm hookbait into what was a low and clear river. The bite came quickly, with the rod tip powerfully slamming round.Initially, Steve wondered if he’d hooked a decent chub, but was pleased this brute of a perch was the culprit. It’s his 13th ‘four’ from a Yorkshire river, and was taken on a simple link leger, fished on 5lb Maxima straight through to a size four hook.
Well done Steve!
