Rory Kingerley works at Apollo Angling in Surrey – and ably demonstrated his qualifications in advising how to tackle up and catch big Perch by catching this wonderful 4lb 1oz specimen! Rory won a weekly Drennan cup award for this excellent photograph of the fish.
After a couple of hook-pulls resulted in lost fish, a key tactical switch from lobworms to little Bleak livebaits brought the all important bite.
“Initially I thought it was a pike, but then it started banging its head and I knew it must be a Perch. I saw it about a foot below the surface when it was halfway across the river and knew I was attached to a big fish, so it was ‘heart in the mouth’ stuff from then on” explained Rory.
Rory’s outfit included 6lb Gardner Hydroflo clear mainline through to a 2 swan Drennan Loafer float and a size 6 Specimen hook on a 5lb Gardner Target Fluorocarbon hooklength.
Drennan Loafer floats are exceptionally popular with specimen Perch anglers – being crystal clear, highly buoyant and available in 3AA, 2 Swan, 2½ Swan, 4 Swan and 5 Swan sizes.
