When targeting tench and bream Gary Newman likes to use this little trick to ensure he knows exactly what kind of bottom he is fishing over.
After finding your chosen spot with a marker float, whether it be a gravel bar or a drop off, it’s always vital to know exactly what is on the bottom before introducing bait or rigs.
Gary’s tip is to tie a short length of mono to the swivel on the lead with a large hook on the other end. When pulling the marker float back across your spot the hook will act like a claw, picking up any debris or weed, giving you a better idea of exactly what is on the bottom.
