Paul Scowen took his 6 year old son, Edgar for only his second ever night fishing trip recently and its one were sure he won’t forget in a hurry!
Paul told us “I took him for his first night last week as he really wanted to see an eel, well we managed one at 2lb 10oz and 5 tench to 8lb+ so mission accomplished. He absolutely loved it and was keen to go again as soon as possible. The second trip was much more productive, the first bite, unbelievably, was a 10.1 tench. The tench then just kept coming and coming, at one point I even had a take before I put the rod in the buzzer. By the time Edgar was asleep we’d had over 20 tench.
The following morning was slower but we continued to catch a few and enjoyed a monster cooked breakfast, then at lunchtime, just before we were due to leave, I had a drop back on the middle rod which resulted in this 16lb 4oz bream. A mate had caught it at 16.8 the previous year and it was a fish that I was keen to catch.
We were fishing to two clear gravel bars. One about 45 yards straight out and the other about 50 yards to our right both which were fed quite heavily with a mixture of pellet, hemp and maggots.
The previous week I had pulled out of several fish using helicopter rigs. The lake is a large southern gravel pit with lots of weed between us and the bars so I had put the lost fish down to the maggot feeders dragging in the weed in conjunction with small hooks. This time we fished hair rigged maggots, size 10 hooks & inline leads which instantly solved the problem.”
