Although specimen fishing can be a waiting game, occasionally results can be gained in a short space of time, as Paul Brooks found when he landed this 3lb 2oz rudd.
With a few hours spare after work, he decided to see if he could track down a few fish on a Fenland river. After finding a group of rudd, he spent time introducing freebies of bread until they were taking confidently. Using a piece of free-lined sinking bread flake, Paul landed a 2lb 11oz fish soon after making his first cast, but it’s powerful fight made its larger shoal mates disappear. Not wanting to give up, Paul had another cast, and as he watched his hookbait gently sinking, a big shadow emerged from beneath a far bank tree and engulfed the bait.
An epic fight followed, with the fish trying everything it could to get away. However, after a stressful couple of minutes, Paul slid what he describes as the ‘best-looking rudd’ he’d ever caught into the net. When it spun the needle of his scales round to 3lb 2oz, he was truly delighted.
Well done Paul!
