Jason Owen stunned everyone on the Drennan Coors AC Trent Masters Final with a brilliant performance on the waggler and bronze maggot.
Drawn on the pipe bridge below Bailey’s Weir, the Coors AC member fished three quarters of the way across the river with a 3AAA waggler, just tripping bottom in 4ft of water. Feeding heavily with bronze maggots and fishing two maggots on a size 18 hook to a 0.12mm hooklength saw him tempt 10 chub to 5lb plus some roach for 27lb 8oz and a great victory. He picked up £500, a new Drennan Acolyte Compact 13ft float rod and the all-important trophy.
Runner-up Nick West was on Ferrybridge peg 4 and also fished a great match. Starting on the long pole with bronze maggots and hemp he was soon catching small roach, fishing with a light 0.4g rig. As the match progressed he switched to hemp on the hook to plunder quality roach for a level 17lb. Nick went home with £300 and a 14ft Acolyte Ultra float rod.
In third place was regular Burton winner Peter Salt from peg 23 on the Municipal length. He alternated between waggler and stick float with bronze maggots for a 13lb 8oz mixed net of roach, chub and perch. Peter won £200 and a 13ft Matchpro Float rod.
During the eight-match series, almost £3,000 was raised for charity with the lion’s share going to Macmillan. A great effort from all of the competitors!
