“When it hit the surface it looked like a seal”
This year’s pike season has been truly remarkable, with thirty-pounders caught pretty much every week. Kirie Hughes of Rhyl is the latest to get amongst the fish, landing this 36lb 4oz specimen from a large Welsh stillwater. After being invited by a few of his mates on a pike fishing trip, he found some old carp gear that’d be suitable and set off.
Casting out a mackerel deadbait, Kirie connected with a hard-fighting fish that stripped line and powered into the depths. When it hit the surface, Kirie says the fish was so big it ‘looked like a seal’.
Well done Kirie!
