Going the extra mile can play an enormous part in catching big fish, and that is exactly what Cambridge angler Kevin Sanders did, embarking on a 200-mile round trip to Surrey for a day targeting crucians.

Finding an area of the lake he fancied clear of angers, he saw a crucian roll in front of him and wasted no time getting into position. With one rod on a cage feeder, the other on a method, both packed with a mix of groundbait, pellet and casters with fake casters being the choice as hookbait, he cast over the area he saw the fish.

At 1pm he had a surprise tench, then an hour later his method feeder rod was away. Initially, he suspected it was another tench, but when he saw a golden back cut through the water’s surface, he played it a fair bit softer. At 4lb 5oz, the fish is Kevin’s new PB and certainly made the drive home bearable.
