Whilst the logic of ‘big baits for big fish’ often rings true, sometimes a much smaller offering can produce the goods.
That’s what Jon Care found on a trip to the Lower Severn, when he had this 17lb 12oz specimen on a small flavoured 10mm pellet, which he wrapped in a bit of paste.
This was fished on a straight lead setup, using a size 12 hook to compliment the bait size.
The fish gave a solid fight, hugging bottom throughout, before John steered it away from a near bank snag and landed it at the second attempt.
