Essex specimen angler Jim Mathews won a weekly Drennan award for this stupendous 5lb 9oz Perch – caught from a Sussex Stillwater. Jim fished an area near an overhanging bush, and used a jumbo king prawn hookbait over a bed of broken prawn pieces to tempt the huge stripy, along with others of 3lb 7oz and 2lb 9oz. Jim’s strategy involved hair-rigging the King Prawn on a size 6 Drennan Super Specialist barbless hook, tied to a 4lb Daiwa Sensor hooklength.
“Several minutes after I hooked it the fish surfaced and my girlfriend and I both caught a glimpse of my adversary. Needless to say, I went very quiet and my legs started to wobble!” Jim told Angling Times.
