West Oxfordshire specimen angler Steve Russell enjoyed a sunny tench session in company with Drennan’s Stewart Moss last week. Fishing a local Stillwater, they managed a number of fine Tench topped by a beautiful dark fish of 9lb 3oz, which fell to Steve’s helicopter-rig maggot feeder approach fished into a lightly weeded area. Steve used the Drennan Heavy Brown Large 2½oz Oval Blockend Feeder to deliver a big payload of top notch maggots, which were then allowed to remain undisturbed for an hour in the swim each time before recasting.
Stewart chipped in with an 8lb 1oz fish (pictured), which was lured with a slightly different approach – the Bolt Rig maggot feeder with an artificial caster hookbait, fished with a PVA mesh bag of caster. These big feeders were delivered approximately 50 yards out into the lake to a prepared area amongst thick Canadian Pond Weed, using the Drennan Distance Specialist Tench & Bream 12ft 2lb rod and a Shimano Baitrunner 6010 GT reel.
After a largely cold, wet, difficult and largely unproductive Spring to date the lads are looking forward to similarly pleasing results as June progresses…!
