Paul ‘Dougie’ Douglas – manager of Carping Capers in Northampton and Northampton Specimen Group member – won a weekly Drennan award in Angling Times for a recent catch of specimen Bream!
Following a number of blank trips to a tough Nene Valley Stillwater, Dougie hit the jackpot when he landed a brace of 14lb 10oz fish, plus a further 10lber.
Tactics were to Spomb a bed of 10mm Boilies, mixed pellets and corn to a silty spot around 60 yards out, just beyond a lightly weeded area. A simple artificial Maize hookbait on a size 10 ESP Curve-Shanx hook to a 5 inch coated braid hooklink with lead clip system did the business – the fish being landed on a Drennan Distance Specialist Tench & Bream 12ft 2lb rod and 12lb Syncro XT mono.
“It’s ‘Blackness’ was the first thing that struck me as it went over the cord, even in the darkness, and I just knew it would be a new PB!” Dougie told us.
