“Talking to other anglers, hardly any tench were coming out, so I stayed away from the boilie and pellet approach that everyone else went for”
After setting himself a target of a double figure tench this season, southern specialist angler Domenic Turner achieved his target from a Hertfordshire stillwater when he landed this 11lb 13oz fish. It only took two sessions to land the beast, and after a blank on his first time out, he headed for the shallowest water he could find, as he felt it’d give him the best chance of a bite.
He told us “Talking to other anglers, hardly any tench were coming out, so I stayed away from the boilie and pellet approach that everyone else went for. Worm and maggot with fishmeal groundbait was my choice, and after feeding a few balls of bait at dawn I cast my heli-rigs over the top, with short hooklinks and triple maggot hookbaits, tipped with a buoyant one. An hour after casting I connected with a good fish, but I didn’t realise how big it was until I lifted the net. An amazing fish, and target achieved.”
