Most big eels reported fall to legering tactics in the dead of night, but Dan Bouskila has just landed this 6lb 4oz whacker on the float during an evening session.
He was targeting a southern gravel where he’d heard tales of large fish, and on previous sessions there had noticed huge eruptions of bubbles rising to the surface – a sure sign of an eel in the vicinity. His plan was to walk the lake, looking for heavy bubbling, and drop a large lobworm right on the fish. He did this using a centrepin reel and a float-leger setup, with a link leger holding a half-ounce flat pear taking his hookbait to the bottom. Dan also added a fluorocarbon leader for extra security. It took three sessions for the tactic to pay off, and when it did, Dan was amazed to hook a fish just 30 seconds after casting, with the powerful specimen giving him a real ‘tug-of-war’ right the way to the net. Dan was keen to add that he feels incredibly lucky to have landed such a fish after just a few sessions, knowing full-well how much of a waiting game big eels generally present.
Well done Dan!
