Round four of the 56-entry Drennan Coors Masters series on the River Trent at Burton, Staffs, became a chub versus bream battle between Paul Newell who drew shallow peg 25 below Baileys Weir and Steve Metcalfe on a deeper glide at Sherratts Farm peg 11.
Bromsgrove matchman, Paul emerged triumphant with 21lb 14oz of chub – his biggest three totalling almost 15lb – on waggler and bronze maggot.
“It’s great to win a Trent match after many years away from the river. The key to making the most of a chub peg is to keep feeding and trotting your float through the swim regularly. You might only catch a few small fish to start with, but eventually bigger ones will push to the front of the shoal. Then you need to hook and land them!” advised Paul.
Loose feeding casters on a deeper waggler line saw Steve (Coors AC) net six bream during a mid-match feeding spell to finish just 10oz adrift with a 21lb 4oz total.
