Thank you to Tottenham’s Andrew Poole for photos of his sensational run of huge Barbel from the River Lea. Like most of us, Andrew had experienced a disappointing start to the season, but that all changed in mid July when he recorded a new personal best Barbel in three consecutive trips!
The run began when Andrew located a shoal of big fish – getting off the mark with a 14lb 10oz fish. The following week he was able to find them again in the same area, a frenetic 20-minute battle through a cabbage patch eventually concluding with the capture of the 15lb 5oz fish.
But the best was still to come with a 16lb 7oz monster! A further trip, in heavy rain, started with Andrew using a 7oz baitdropper to deliver a mix of fishmeal groundbait, pellet and maggot – fishing double 16mm pellet as hookbait on a size 6 Super Specialist Barbel hook. Andrew had spent extra-time disguising his end tackle (and it plainly paid off) – electing to use a home made rough stone weight & 1.5oz inline back-lead, and an 18 inch fluorocarbon hooklength.
