Dan Varney has enjoyed a weekend to remember, after qualifying for both the Evesham Championship and the Wychavon Championship finals in successive days!
After finishing second in the 83-peg Evesham Championship qualifier on Saturday from Peg 36, one swim past the famous River Isbourne confluence, Dan drew the same peg the next day! This time he went one better, however, and made absolutely no mistakes to win the 78-peg event with an 11-5-0 catch – roughly twice the weight of the second-placed angler!
Although Dan caught a few perch and eels with a flat float at 13 metres on the first day, the majority of his two weights consisted of chub and chublets caught with the long pole out into the main flow. Using a full 16 metres of Drennan Acolyte with a long top-four rig and lightly strung-out 0.4g Drennan G-Tip3 pole float, he was able to take full advantage of his swim.
Lightly loose feeding bronze maggots and fishing a single bronze maggot on a size 20 Drennan Carbon Match to 0.10mm Supplex hooklength certainly worked its magic for the in-form Banbury-based man!
