James Champkin 3lb 4oz Grayling

This winter, James Champkin has been getting to grips with Euro nymphing for big grayling, and his efforts have paid off with this 3lb 4oz specimen before the end of the river season.

The tactic involves fishing weighted flies at close range and maintaining a tight connection between the rod tip and flies as they drift through a run. After a little tuition, James felt he was fishing with reasonable effectiveness, and on a trip to the River Frome, had managed a fish of 2lb 8oz, plus a few smaller ones, before walking back to his car.

On his way, he took a closer look at a pool where a fallen tree forced the river through a narrow gap, causing a rapid increase in pace and depth. Although the casting was a little awkward, he connected with a heavy fish on his second run through, which quickly surged downstream. Fortunately, James soon managed to net the grayling that’s a new personal best, and an extra-special one on fly fishing tactics.

Well done James!
