Young Oliver Jenkinson, aged 14, from Bedfordshire has enjoyed a spectacular season, catching big fish by design on a really consistent basis! The culmination of hard work is this quite superb Chub weighing 7lb 2oz from the Ouse system, which won him a deserved weekly Drennan Cup award in Angling Times last week.
Ollie described to us his ‘true red letter day’, when after locating some fish in proximity to a snag he was able to go back and catch them by presenting a natural Lobworm hook-bait. First he caught a wonderful brace of Perch scaling 3lb 2oz and 3lb, before hooking the super-Chub he’d spotted earlier in the swim.
“The fight was amazing and I could see in the clear water that I was connected to a large Chub, more than likely the one I’d seen in the snags!” explained Ollie.
A simple running leger rig using 2 x float stops (so Ollie could adjust the length of his hooklink) on 8lb Supplex Line to a size 8 Super Specialist Barbel hook was all Ollie needed to catch these super fish.
