Lowestoft, Suffolk angler Peter Hayes with one of a brace of 5lb Chub caught in the River Waveney during freezing cold weather recently!
Peter arrived at the river at dawn on a very cold morning with a heavy frost on the ground, finding the river fining down and in good trim after several weeks flooding. He had a strong feeling he would catch! After introducing some samples of his own blend of cheesepaste, which includes some potent powdered appetite stimulators, the swim was left to rest for an hour.
The first cast produced the first 5lb Chub, after which Peter introduced more bait and then rested the swim for a while. After fishing a series of ultimately unsuccessful swims, Peter, a member of the Osprey Specimen Group, capped a memorable day by returning to the original swim to take a second 5lber late in the afternoon! Both fish were in fine condition and gave spirited fights on a Free Spirit Specialist Advanced 11ft 1lb 2oz rod with 6lb Fox Soft Steel mainline.
Peter used a rig recommended by Terry Lampard in his popular “Lampards Way With Chub” DVD – a simple link leger comprising a rig ring, some Swan shot and rubber float stops. At the sharp end Peter likes the Drennan Continental Boilie hooks for large baits such as Cheesepaste, Meat and big chunks of bread.
“I can hand on heart say that I have never experienced a hook pull when using the hooks. Once they go in they stay in!” Peter remarked.
