The in-form Drennan Oxford squad had double cause to celebrate at the weekend after taking team and individual glory in the Turner 400.
This annual event saw 29 teams of 4 competing on the Upper River Thames from Grafham Lock to Tadpole Bridge. Conditions were good with some flow and colour which meant the fish fed really well, including plenty of chub.
The individual prize went to Mick Denton with 32lb. The Drennan Oxford captain drew three swims above Radcot Bridge and had eight chub to 4lb and 10lb of smaller fish. All were caught on the pole at 14.5 metres with worm over chopped worm and caster feed. Knowing his peg had a history of chub and lost fish he used extra strong tackle. A rig with a 1.5g Drennan Trio float was re-rigged on 0.26mm Supplex to a 0.17mm Supplex Fluorocarbon hooklength and size 14 Wide Gape hook with double No10 solid elastic. It certainly did the trick!
Second place went to Geoff Lewendon, fishing for Drennan Oxford Black, with 24lb 5oz. He drew two pegs below Rushey Lock and had chub to 5lb on waggler and caster. Third place Chris Bowen, fishing for Radcot Old Boys, who used similar tactics from a peg at Radcot down.
Drennan Oxford Yellow quartet of Steve Townsend, Paul Glenfield, Tom Hobbs and Steve Harwood took the team prize with an impressive 99 points out of a possible 112. Second place went to Garbolino Blackmore Vale on 96 points and Turners were third with 84 points.
