Midlands carper Ryan Need deservedly won the UK Carp Cup held at Oxfordshire’s Richworth Linear Fisheries recently, with the aid of a colossal investment in maggots and by including Drennan Double Strength line in his zig rigs!

After winning through both a heat and a semi-final, Ryan went into the final on Oxlease Lake (a day ticket venue open to all) determined to bag the trophy and £5000 first prize money, the match being a 40 hour specialist event, with three rods allowed per competitor.

Ryan made a big tactical decision by purchasing a huge volume of maggots, dousing them with Mainline Pineapple flavouring, and then fishing Zig rigs over the very heavily spodded area.   After early drama with a broken spod rod, the strategy paid off handsomely with Ryan totaling 227lb 11oz, including a quite superb 37lb 11oz Mirror!

A huge amount of preparation had gone into preparing a number of pre-tied different zig rigs, which Ryan constructed with 10lb Drennan Double Strength mono through to a size 8 Korda hook.
