Lake Semerwater Bream Fishing

Shaun Mcnaughton from Thornaby On Tees has sent us some interesting photos from Lake Semerwater in the Yorkshire Dales.  Shaun tells us this is the highest natural Tarn in Britain, is 1300 feet above sea level and is 100 acres!

With an average depth of 6 feet it naturally supports a massive head of coarse fish, being well stocked Bream, Roach and Pike – all for just £5.50 a day ticket!

Shaun and his friend Graham Airey normally target the Bream using a traditional approach fishing corn & worm hookbaits over a sweet, dark groundbait & maggots.  Usually fishing at around 60 yards range, 1/2 oz Glass Feedertips are ideal to indicate the normal ‘wrap-around’ bites!

Interestingly the lads have found by gently introducing the amount of groundbait into the peg, they usually have fish from start to finish in a 6 hour session – rather than a ‘bombs away with balls of groundbait’ style at the start.  They set the seatboxes up about 5 yards into the water to allow for keepnets and so they can sink the line etc as it inches deep off the bank.

Shaun uses a 30g Groundbait feeder paternoster rig with 18 inch 0.14mm mono hooklength, to a size 16 or 14 hook (depending on the bait) – often changing to a smaller medium feeder once he’s happy there’s sufficient bait in the swim.

Shaun is pictured with some of a recent 60lb bag of Bream from the lake!
