Andy Waters Summer Chubbing

Thank you to Andy Waters from Lowestoft, Suffolk, for these wonderful photos taken during his Summer Chub trips on the River Waveney.

Andy reports very simple tactics & stealth have produced good numbers of fish in the 4lb class, with some 5lbers up to almost 6lb!  This is an angling situation where keeping a low profile, camo clothing, cap and polaroids really make a difference.

With the flow being almost non-existent at present basic rigs have included a size 6 Super Specialist hook to 7lb Double Strength, and a minimal amount of split shot (to suit each swim) mounted on a short Fluorocarbon link to a float stop.  This is a really flexible tactic as you can easily adjust the hooklength to suit, and also the link slips under pressure if required when angry Chub attempt to find a snag!  Andy’s best bait this Summer has been plain old ‘Spam’ luncheon meat.

Andy recently purchased an FD 3000 reel for his Chub fishing – reporting that he loves the reel, finding it very smooth, light and quick and easy to spool up.   We like the photo below of Andy’s reel and his Shimano Purist Light Specialist rod – the sleek shiny body of the reel contrasting with the slightly out-of-condition hollow Summer Chub!
